Dr John Ainge

John has been working at Barton General Practice in Canberra since 2013. He enjoys and has expertise in all aspects of General Practice but has particular interests in preventive health and chronic disease management.
He is currently on extended sick leave but fully expects to be back at BGP by the end of the year.
John studied Science and then Medicine at the University of NSW in Sydney. After graduating in 1983, he moved to Canberra and worked at the Woden Valley and Canberra Hospitals, before completing his General Practice training and gaining his Diploma of Obstetrics. He then worked at Westmead Hospital in Sydney to gain additional advanced experience in Paediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He then returned to Canberra and commenced working in General Practice at Gowrie Medical Centre in Tuggeranong.
In 1997, John took up a leadership position in rapidly evolving field of health information technology. He several led teams developing software systems designed to improve medication safety in general practice, hospitals and aged care facilities. The core software that his team developed is used in hospitals across Australia, New Zealand and the UK. In 2014, he was recognised for this contribution with the awarding of a Fellowship of the Australian College of Health Informatics.
Outside of clinical practice, John is both a son, father and grandfather, enjoying all aspects of family life. He is also a keen alpine and cross country snow skier and served for many years in a voluntary role on the board of SnowSports ACT including representing ACT on the National Alpine Committee of Skiing Australia.
